Blood flow restriction therapy is a technology that helps patients recover by reducing muscle wasting, or atrophy, and promoting growth of the muscle. Blood flow restriction therapy uses a cuff, like a blood pressure cuff used in physician's offices, to strategically reduce blood flow to an extremity during exercise resulting in increased muscle activation. Our clinic uses the Smart Cuffs system which is fully automated facilitating a consistent and safe occlusion pressure.
BFR is most commonly used after surgery to increase muscle bulk without compromising the surgical site. It is appropriate for a wide variety of patients and can be discussed with your provider as a potential therapy in your treatment plan.
